Since the early 1990s, YouthZone has partnered with the State of Colorado to explore alternatives to juvenile detention via the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum (CYDC) program. The goal of the program is to ensure all youth who are charged with a felony-level offense in District Court are placed in an environment that fosters the capacity for change, reduces the likelihood of future legal involvement, and allows them to become productive, responsible members of society.
The process starts with a comprehensive assessment conducted on-site at the local police department by a CYDC Youth Advocate. Based on the results of the assessment, a multidisciplinary team determines whether the youth is sent to detention prior to their trial. This team includes a prosecutor from the District Attorney's office, a District Court judge, and the Youth Advocate. While awaiting trial, the Youth Advocate provides a series of services to the youth, including supervision, monitoring, substance use education, therapy, restorative justice, and wraparound services.
By offering alternatives to detention for young people, we can ensure that youth can grow, learn, and thrive in their communities instead of detention centers. We are proud that our programs have helped countless young people reintegrate into society, exhibit positive change, and avoid reoffending.
