Great news!! Colorado House Bill 13-1254, introduced by State Representative Pete Lee, has passed. The Restorative Justice (RJ) Pilot Project law will initiate an RJ fund by adding $10 to offender fees. This fund will help develop new pilot projects in four counties and support research studying the outcomes of restorative justice. The money will also fund a new State RJ Coordinator position that will work with the state RJ Council and RJ programs around Colorado. During Howard Zehr’s recent visit to YouthZone, he mentioned that since restorative justice is a grassroots process, there is no group or agency that oversees it. The State Restorative Justice Coordinator could develop practices and standards for all programs and training.
