1. Treat the other person with respect.  Words, tone of voice, the way you listen, how you look at them, type of reasoning.

2. Listen until you experience the other side.  Use paraphrasing or reflective listening to obtain 100% communication. Reflect content meaning and feeling.

3. State your views, needs and feelings.  State your point of view briefly. Avoid loaded words. Say what you mean and mean what you say, don’t use extreme statements. Disclose your feelings – until the emotional issues are resolved the substantive issues won’t be settled. There are some occasions when step 3 is unnecessary.
